Presentation Skills
Background and Objective
Since 2015, Impact Factory has partnered with Britvic to deliver a range of development programmes, including storytelling, presenting with impact, and open soft skills courses, which their team members regularly attend. As part of this collaboration, a dedicated Presentation Skills Training Programme was developed.
In 2025, following the merger with Carlsberg and new involvement in beer production, Britvic’s technical team, mainly scientists and project managers, faced the challenge of presenting complex technical information clearly to diverse, non-technical stakeholders.
Joe Acton, a project manager with extensive experience across the company, took the lead in organising the tailored presentation skills training programme to help approximately 20 team members improve their confidence, structure, and ability to engage audiences both in-person and virtually. This presentation skills training was crucial for enhancing communication effectiveness.
Programme Overview
The training took place at Britvic’s Hemel Hempstead HQ in June 2025 and combined plenary sessions, small group interactive workshops, and filmed playback for personalised feedback. The programme included energisers, practical exercises for managing nerves, remote presentation techniques, and PowerPoint best practices.
Multiple trainers facilitated breakout groups to maximise individual attention and support during the Presentation Skills Training Programme sessions. The content was tailored to help the technical team transition from highly detailed scientific presentations to concise, audience-focused communication.
Key Content
- Clarifying the purpose of presenting beyond emails: influencing audiences emotionally and intellectually.
- The power of inclusive eye contact to engage all audience members.
- Sharing personal “Turning Points” stories to build authenticity and connection.
- Practical strategies to manage nerves, including breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and confidence scaling.
- Workshoped “Hot Starts” and crafting clear, concise key messages during Presentation Skills Training Programme.
- Applying Aristotle’s storytelling structure: Attention, Problem, Solution, Benefits, Call to Action.
- PowerPoint as a visual aid: limiting slide content, using the ‘B’ button, agile navigation, and avoiding “sliduments.”
- Handling challenging questions with pause, reflection, and spreading eye contact.
- Best practices for presenting remotely to maintain engagement and control pacing.
Desired Outcomes
Participants enhanced their ability to present complex technical content in an accessible and engaging way, developing confidence and skills to connect with non-expert stakeholders through sessions in the Presentation Skills Training Programme.
They learned to use visual aids effectively and handle questions confidently in both face-to-face and virtual settings. The training aimed to support Britvic’s evolving business needs and lay the foundations for ongoing development through coaching and refresher sessions.
